How Does Willy Russell Create Mood and Atmosphere in the...

In the Summer Sequence Willy Russell’s three main protagonists are shown to grow up from the ages of 15 to 18, thus becoming adults throughout the song. This means that the sequence acts as a watershed in the respect that it marks a major turning point in the play. This is shown through the atmosphere that Russell creates, which goes from fairly positive, hopeful tone to a more cynical and desperate one over the duration of the sequence. Russell uses several techniques to create these atmospheres throughout. In the opening of the Summer Sequence the atmosphere is clearly a happy one, which is shown by Russell by using words like â€Å"young, free and innocent† to describe the characters. In this section, the word â€Å"innocent† is used twice.†¦show more content†¦This explicitly refers to the brothers’ fate in a way in which the last section didn’t, so the tone is far more marred by the eventuality of their deaths. This date is also referenced when Russell extends the metaphor, â€Å"fate the later seasons bring†, which causes the audience to remember the scene at the very beginning of the play, preventing them from being drawn into the initial happiness of the three teenagers in this sequence. Again, it refers to Linda being caught in the middle of the pair, foreshadowing their final argument. It also refers to Linda paying a â€Å"price†, a theme that was initially shown in the song ‘Easy Terms’, sung by Mrs Johnstone, and in both cases foreshadows the price they’ll have to pay for their involvement in the twins’ lives. The music becomes far more serious and sinister, a repetitive tense note with no actual melody. In the next section a recurring theme is shown with the references to time. This creates a sad, melancholic atmosphere, as the audience is aware of the character’s significant lack of time together, but the characters are not, so their happy unawareness and this dramatic irony is slightly poignant. Again, fate is reference by the narrator â€Å"care not for what’s at the end of the day†, again forcing the audience to remember the fate of the boys, this

The Theme of Inequality There are various major themes in â€Å"The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass†. One of the most prominent themes in the book is inequality. The theme is dominant due to its real values in the institution of slavery. The theme not only regularly appears in the narrative but is in so many ways interconnected with other themes such as education. Inequality is the most dominant in the narrative. Douglass attempts to reveal how the African American slaves are just like their white counterparts despite the number of times it is revealed how the whites did not consent the slaves as rightly human (Docsouth.unc.edu, 2015). Comparatively, Phyllis spoke on inequality as she lived as an African American slave and recognizes that the stay in America was one of the saddest moments in the history of the country. Perhaps one of her greatest contribution she had was the Seneca Falls convention. There she helped draft the Declaration of Sentiments. This was a list of twelveitems that were unfair to women. Encased in a rather stout container, the prints on it are rather gloomy and reminiscent of the retro era. The commercial for it however, is quite lively and upbeat, which makes it unique from earlier commercials theyve made. Instead of the usual adult movie reference, the Dark Temptation commercial was quite fantasy like. It reminded me of the Tin Man walking along the yellow brick road hoping to receive what he desperately needed. The commercial begins in a stark white bathroom. In front of a mirror is a young male in his late teens or early twenties holding a can in his right hand. The only sounds heard are sprays emanating from this can. After a few quick spurts the screen fades out to the male placing the can onto a toilet top. As his hand moves away, all thats seen is this dark brown can which seems to stand out amongst all the bleak items surrounding it. The contrast of colors makes it kind of hard to not notice the word AXE. After a quick silence a melodic beat starts to fade in and the view is returned to the mirror. But instead of the dull slim teenager we first started with, we see a jolly upbeat man made of chocolate. Looking similar to a Mr. Good time Easter Bunny chocolate, only at a much grander scale, and with a daunting smile that seems resistant to movement no matter how hard he tried. After a last look in the bathroom mirror, the scene is turns into the new chocolate guy walking down the street getting licked, kissed, eaten and chased by women. Advertisements for Axe body spray are highly catchy in that they appeal to a mans confidence level. Axe commercials are shown where a typical guy receives immediate attention from the opposite sex once he has used Axe body spray. The use of this product acts as an instantaneous female response mechanism, or at least it seems so. The feedback that a male receives with the use of Axe is referred to as the Axe Effect. According to its creators, the Axe Effect is an internationally recognized name for the increased attention axe-wearing males receive from eager, and attractive female pursuers. Regardless of where you can get some axe effect by going to a store near you and purchasing one of the fine products (Axe Effect). The sexual innuendo found on the products web page relates itself back to one of the products recent slogans, It can happen anywhere. This one particular commercial portrays exactly that. A cute young man who hasnt finished buttoning up his shirt walks into an elevator. He sprays on some Axe, exits, and another guy, more of a nerd gets on. Apparently the smell of Axe lingers in the air, because the attractive woman who steps in next finds herself drawn to the nerd. Its the Axe Effect! She presses the emergency stop button. In the next shot, the doors open and apparently shes attacked him in a quick intense make out session. Shes straightening her dress, his hair is messy and he looks dazed, etc. As the door starts to close, another woman approaches, and you can see in her eyes that Axe is working on her, too. In a magazine I came across two ads for AXE. The first one shows a woman in a dressing room who has previously engaged in sexual activities or at least in modern day terms referred to as fooling around. The focus point found in this image is located on the models back of what is seen as the imprint of a hanger. Although the details may not seem obvious, the price tag still attached to the dress along with mirror and its bright lights in the background suggest a fitting room. The light background softens the image of the ad and gives a glow to the females bare back. The colors present are not overpowering and therefore go very well with each other. Attention is given to a portion of the maroon colo red dress and the aluminous skin tone of the model. The face of the female is not visible, but when looked upon closely to the details of her hair structure, it is a fair assumption to say that she is of Asian descent. Although this may seem as if it were a minor detail, it is possible that it was the creators vision to use this subtle illusion as a technique of appealing to males of various races as well as various preferences of different characteristics as skin tone and hair color. The second AXE ad depicts the same situation but rather than a dressing room, the female is found to be outdoors, near the water, with an imprint of a boat steering wheel on her back. The source of the imprint is imagined to be given the surrounding details such as her attire, the clear sky, and as mentioned before, the blue water. In the same manner as the previous image, the background is not overly exposed and does not take attention away from the model that in this case is Caucasian with blonde hair. Not only has the ethnicity of the model have been changed, the color scheme of each ad has differed in order to better depict the scenario. Because this is an outdoor scene, the choice of teal for the bikini goes very well hand in hand with the blue tone of the backdrop. The focusing on both images is nice. The background is blurred so it does not serve as a distraction; rather, it acts as one of the elements that aids in deciphering the content. An interesting note of the companys method of advertisement is that it is not directly campaigning the product; the product does not even appear within the ad itself. This is done carefully in that it shows the creativity of the products manufacturer. Any company can find the best looking models and have them hold the product in her hands but instead, Axe goes a different route and arefully manipulates the technique for delivering the message across to the audience. They are leaving the interpretation up to the audience of what Axe products can successfully do. The imagination of the Axe Effect remains with the viewer. Nowhere within the ad does it say that these girls have engaged in sexual activities, although the insinuations are present. These campaigns simply display the possibilities of Axe, just like how it can be possible for a typical male to witness such promiscuous encountering. By using different elements from ad to ad, the company is able to better reach out to a wider range of audience or more specifically a wider range of male audience. Because not all males may have the same exact taste in women, Axe uses various ethnicities of the models, her skin tone, hair color, and body structure as a method of appealing to different men. Just like the model herself, Axe varies the environment within the ads to not only support its slogan, it is a way for the male audience to connect with the message according to whatever is better fitting to his own lifestyle preference. Usage of sex in commercial advertisements is highly recognizable but the important issue is whether or not it truly works. Even with the presence of strong sexual innuendos, people tend to have problems recalling such advertisements. Basically, sex within ads does not sell anything other than itself (The Big Turn Off). Sex initially grabs our attention but possibly loses our interest and we no longer recall the merchandises that are in the advertisements. Cuban Revolution essays The Cuban Revolution of the 1950s was a big part of history in the 20th century. Cuba was the first Latin American country to start a communist style of government, the first to go against the United States of America and the first to ally with the Soviet Union. The main leader of this revolution was Fidel Castro, who is still the leader of Cuba today. The document of have chosen as the basis for my paper is the, Creeping Revolt, this article was published January 7, 1957 by Time magazine. It was published right around the time in which Fidel Castro and his group of revolutionaries who were called the 26th of July Movement because that is the day Fidel Castro led an attack on the Moncada army barracks. The Castro or Cuban revolution was not widely reported because the leader of Cuba at the time, President Batista, tried to keep the revolution secret so that all the other countries would think that Cuba was not in any danger of rebels taking the whole country over. The Cuban Revolution led the way for other Latin American countries to try and rid the American influence from their country. Fidel Castro and the 26th of July Movement also showed the effectiveness of guerilla warfare and this type of fighting was adopted by many rebels around the world, for better or worse. Fidel Castro brought Cuban nationalism into his fight for freedom and justice and this is why much of the Cuban public supported him at the time of his Revolution. The Cuban Revolution shows what a small group of rebels can do when they have a charismatic leader along with a determined group of followers, who were willing to risk their lives for Castros cause. Freud’s Perspective of an Advertisement for Clinique Although Freud's theories of psychoanalysis tended to deal exclusively with dreams, his understanding of the unconscious proves to be entirely useful in deconstructing popular culture. We can take, for example, the Clinique advertisement into consideration by viewing the image itself as a public (perhaps collective) and published dream. Freud may not have been particularly interested in the visual features or compostion of the image, yet these components are vital to the translation from conscious to unconscious thoughts. First, we can examine the bar of soap itself, as depicted in the scene. We are at once struck by the grotesque and commanding zie (certainly unrealistic) of the bar; yet it also appears insolated - from a consumer, from production, etc. The bar is shown in another (unusual) manner: its yellow-green colour portrays a "clean" and "natural" product, but also conveys an immaculate, medicalized one. While the components mentioned can be understood as the visual, manifest content, we can attempt to translate their hidden, subverted, latent thoughts. According to Freud, all manifest content is subject to distortion by the "dream-work" (the mechanism by which such thoughts are altered, and thus we must decode the image by paying particular attention to the hidden elements (the ones that resist our analysis most). If all thoughts are generated in the unconscious, as Freud believes, then we must center our analysis on these hidden or latent components. One can see how, in this Clinique advertisement, Freud's theory of the dream-work is logical; both dream-distortion and dream-censorship are evident. An initial psychoanalysis of the image reveals an inherent desire to be "wholesome" (or "moral", as depicted by the rounded bubbles), "clean" (or "moral", as depicted by the medicalized soap) and "pure" (or "moral", as depicted by the clear, natural water). It is my understanding then, that this advertisement appeals to the viewer as a "sinner", or flawed individual, and aims to reconcile this deficiency through morality. Symbolism and Allusion in Maya Angelou's "My Arkansas" "There is a deep brooding/ in Arkansas." Arkansas is stuck in the past, its memories of hatred and crime from ante-bellum days hindering the progression towards Civil Rights. Maya Angelou's poem of the struggle to a new wave of equality uses both general symbolism and historical allusion to make its theme clear to the reader. The poem uses general symbolism in nature, in time, and historical allusion to make the theme clear in a concise but vibrant poem. The general symbolism relating to nature assumes a common base of knowledge from which symbolism can be built. The poem opens with a description of Arkansas: "Old crimes like moss pend/ from poplar trees./ The sullen earth/ is much too/ red for comfort." The first example of general symbolism in this passage is the reference to moss. Moss is considered the base of the forest, the lowest level from which all of the other plants grow. Although moss is vital to a forest, it is often thought of as slimy and dirty. The moss "pend(s) from poplar trees," our second natural symbol. The poplar tree is weak and useless. Nothing can be built from its wood, and it often bends and breaks during storms. The visual image of the moss clinging to the poplar tree shows the slimy moss as "old crimes" and the poplar tree as the frail attempt at growth and a new but weak beginning. The reader gets a clear sense of the struggle toward a new life that is hindered and held back by the old, dependable moss t hat has been and always will be present. The second part of the passage discusses the "sullen earth" that is "much too red." Red earth can be symbolic in two ... ...e. Finally at the end of the poem the historical allusion brings the poem to a complete closure, and the theme of starting fresh is put into a more specific context. The "old hates" and "old crimes" are referring to those against African-Americans in the days of slavery. the new beginning for Arkansas is the attempt to reach equality, leaving the past behind. "Today is yet to come in Arkansas." Reading Angelou's poem shows the reader a new perspective on civil rights and its applicability in society. The use of general symbolism found in nature through the weak poplar tree hindered by moss and the cautious sun, paired with the historical allusion to the ante-bellum times make the theme of the poem clear. The past cannot be forgotten, and may hinder the future. Arkansas' struggle toward the future "writhes in awful/ waves of brooding" of the past.

Comparing The Elements of Style by Strunk and White and Style Toward Clarity and Grace by Williams Both The Elements of Style by Strunk and White and Style Toward Clarity and Grace by Williams emphasize the importance of ‘style’ in writing. Though they agree style is important, their approach and views of style differ. Stunk and White’s book was published in 1912 and was written for the old-fashioned ivy leaguers. This can be expressed by their use of the pronoun ‘he’. According to Strunk and White ‘he’ should always be used. Williams’ book was published in 1981 and in more culturally written. Williams states that a writer can use either ‘he’ or ‘she’; whichever is socially acceptable. He also tells the writer to use such words as police officer instead of policeman and mail carrier instead of mailman. Strunk and White feel that to be a good writer one must adhere to the rules they state in their book. Jeri Eleswed’s blog states that she was amazed that she already incorporated many of the rules in Strunk and White’s book into her own writing. They feel it is important for the writer to have an individual style â€Å"†¦what your are, rather than what you know, will at last determine your style†. (Strunk 84) Strunk tells the writer that he should sympathize with the reader, but never seek to know the reader’s wants. The duty of the writer is to â€Å"please and satisfy yourself and a true writer always plays to a party of one†. (Strunk 84) In Patty Clark’s Blog spot she gave a great statement about Strunk and White. â€Å"The voice in which this little book is written sounds like an old-fashioned schoolmaster†. I completely agree with her and when I read their book I picture my twelfth grade English teacher at the bl ackboard with her fancy chalk holder cramming grammar down our throats. Williams’ views on style are more diverse. According to him, style should be more about the audience the writer is writing to rather than the writer himself. Williams explains how to write or the reader. In his last chapter Williams states how to write in a constructive voice, how to the flow of information affects the reader, what words to use when the reader has prior knowledge of the subject and when he or she does not, and how to be clear for the reader.

Some people believe music therapy may be beneficial to the health care of children with cancer by promoting social interaction and cooperation.There is evidence that music therapy can reduce high blood pressure, rapid heart beat, depression, and sleeplessness. There are no claims music therapy can cure cancer or other diseases, but medical experts do believe it can reduce some symptoms, aid healing, improve physical movement, and enrich a patient’s quality of life. Ancient Greek philosophers believed music could heal both body and mind, Native Americans used singing and chants to heal millennia. More formal approaches begin in World War two when hospitals started using music to help soldiers with shell shock.In 1944, Michigan State University established the first music therapy degree program in the world. Music therapists design music sessions for individuals and groups based on their needs and tastes. Some aspects of music therapy include making music, listening to music, writing songs , and talking about lyrics. Music therapy may also involve imagery and learning through music. The patient does ot need to have any musical ability to benefit from music therapy. Most peoples reaction to music is a burst of energy upon hearing an upbeat song or a sense of calm during a soothing classical piece. Music therapy uses this connection between music and mood. It has also been shown to lower amounts of the hormone cortisol, which becomes elevated under stress, and to increase the release of endorphins, the body’s natural â€Å"feel-good† hormones. Researchers have found that music therapy, when used with anti-nausea drugs for patients receiving high-dose chemotherapy, can help ease nausea and vomiting.A number of clinical trials have shown the benefit of music therapy for short-term pain, including pain from can cer. With all these benefits that music can carry, it's no surprise that music therapy is growing in popularity. Many hospitals are using music therapists for pain management and other uses. Music therapists help with several other issues as well, including stress.While music therapy is an important discipline, you can also achieve many benefits from music on your own. Music can be used in daily life for relaxation, to gain energy when feeling drained, for catharsis when dealing with emotional stress, and in other ways as well. Music therapy has been proven to be an effective form of therapy in a variety of areas for a multitude of ailments. However, there is still much more theorizing, discussion, and research that needs to be done in this area, and that fact makes it all the more interesting.Thr ough technological advances and constantly evolving musical styles as well as cross-cultural influences, this is one form of therapy that will never cease to be innovative and topical. Hopefully, researchers will continue to treat this topic as a serious area of psychology and one that deserves to be molded into a more scientific pedagogy through advancement and refinement of research and therapeutic techniques.
